The three angles

What a wheel alignment actually adjusts

Three angles, one at a time. Green is the wheel set to your car's own figure. Red is the same wheel out of specification.

Two front views of a wheel side by side. On the left the wheel stands vertical and is in specification. On the right it leans outward at the top and is out of specification. in specification out of specification
Two side views of a wheel. On the left the steering axis is tilted backward and is in specification. On the right the axis stands vertical and is out of specification. in specification out of specification direction of travel
Two top views of a pair of wheels. On the left both point straight ahead and are in specification. On the right both point inward at the front and are out of specification. in specification out of specification front of vehicle

Camber

Camber is the inward or outward lean of the wheel measured against true vertical.

When it is out Wears one shoulder of the tyre bald while the rest of the tread still looks new. Uneven side to side, it also pulls the steering.

Caster

Caster is the backward tilt of the steering axis. It is what makes the steering wheel return to centre by itself after a turn.

When it is out The wheel stops self-centring, straight-line tracking wanders, and the car feels vague at highway speed.

Toe

Toe is whether the wheels point in, out, or straight ahead relative to each other.

When it is out Drags the tyres sideways down the road. Toe is the angle that destroys a set of tyres fastest.

The angles above are exaggerated so they are visible. A real camber or caster adjustment is a fraction of a degree, measured against your own vehicle's factory figures rather than a generic setting.
